HOD Learning Extension Department- 2MUs and 1MMA

We are seeking a student focused, innovative and collaborative leader for the position of Head of Department (HOD) – Learning Extension to join us in 2027. The Learning Extension Department at MRGS is dedicated to identifying the needs and requisite support for our learners to optimise their educational pathways (learning support). The department consists of 3 teachers and 10 teacher aides. Our school-wide values of Manaakitanga (respect and empathy), Whanaungatanga (whanau, participation and leadership), and Tūmanakotanga (aspiration) underpin everything we do. As Head of Department you would: Work closely and strategically with the school Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) to identify student needs and support, and to identify and support those students eligible for Special Assessment Conditions. To ensure they receive equitable and authentic assessment opportunities. Work closely and strategically with Senior Literacy Teacher to develop, deliver and monitor the Junior Literacy Programme, designed to accelerate literacy progress for targeted students. Organise, schedule, and optimise Teacher Aide (Learning Assistant) support across mainstream classrooms, Literacy and Numeracy classes and individual students, to maximize student engagement and target assistance where it is most needed. To liaise closely with school Pastoral, Guidance and Health Departments, Outside Providers and Community Organisations to optimise a holistic approach to our student support. Provide a range of practical supports that remove potential barriers to student engagement. Successful applicants will be expected to take a full part in the co-curricular life of the school.
