Science Head of Department

Commencing 26 January 2027 St Patrick’s College Silverstream is a Catholic Marist boys’ school located in Silverstream, Upper Hutt, for years 9 to 13. We are seeking a dynamic, inspirational and experienced educator to lead our Science Department. The successful applicant will be passionate about Science education, committed to fostering curiosity and achievement across all disciplines—Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Space Science—and capable of leading a team to deliver high-quality, innovative learning experiences. Key responsibilities Lead/support a team of science teachers. Oversee curriculum development, assessment, and innovation in teaching practice. Promote academic excellence and engagement from Years 9–13, preparing students for assessments. Deliver high-quality, engaging and impactful lessons across science levels. Support staff professional growth, maintain a positive collaborative team culture. Contribute to extracurricular/co-curricular activities and the Special Character of the College. The successful candidate will have: NZ teacher registration and current practising certificate. Strong curriculum knowledge and NCEA experience (Years 9–13). Leadership experience (Assistant HoD or HoD) or clear leadership potential. Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills. Ability to build collaborative, effective working relationships to improve student outcomes. Experience delivering flexible, engaging lessons to meet diverse learning needs. Strong classroom management and ability to create a stimulating learning environment. Strong data organisation and planning skills to collate information efficiently.
